My big brother, who has been unemployed like me for quite a while now, got himself a job recently.

He will be moving to the Washington, D.C. area to take on the project management of an engineering firm. He’s excited about the new challenge and living near our nation’s Capital. I’m happy for him, yet… I’m sad. My brother is pretty much the only close family that I have left in this world. Sure, I have aunts/uncles and a niece and nephew, but that’s not the same thing.

Since my brother hit the skids financially, he’s been living at my uncle Pete’s house about two blocks from me here in Tampa. Before that, he lived about an hour’s drive away from me. I’ve gotten used to him being just around the corner. As a matter of fact, it was comforting knowing that he was that close, especially during my stint with health issues this past September. I think I’m going to miss him being close by.

This brings to mind a reminiscence from my childhood. When my brother went off to college at the University of Florida in ’69, I cried myself to sleep every night. I remember wandering around the school yard on lunch recess blubbering to myself about how much I loved and missed my big brother T. His name is Steve, but I couldn’t pronounce it as a child, so he was just “T” back then.

Well, brother mine… while I surely wish you all the best in your new adventures, I do believe I’m going to miss you. Just wanted you to know.

Later…

~Eric

  1. Yes, wishing those close to us well, but missing them so much when they have to move elsewhere to do well, that’s hard.

I wish your big brother well and hope he stays safe in D.C. And I wish you well and may you keep in close touch when you can and may you find someone close by to at least fill some of the void of loss.

    We love you Eric! ๐Ÿ˜€

I have my close friends and I have my extended family, but that’s not the same thing as a brother or sister. I’m sure he and I will talk/email frequently. He’ll probably be zipping back and forth, too. He’ll be coming whenever he gets the chance to visit with his grandchildren here in Tampa and for other things. The contract is for 1 year on this new job. After that will depend on what’s happening in his life at that time. He plans on continuing to look for other opportunities close to “home”, but you know how that goes. He’ll get busy with the new job and comfortable in his new surroundings up there.

Ah well, I always hated Sundays as a kid and young adult. They were usually melancholy days for me. Today feels like one of those type Sundays. It’s been pleasantly mellow with a touch of sadness tossed in for good measure.

      Off I go…

  2. Well I am pretty much in your brother’s shoes right now. I have no family in PA as they all live in Alabama. Hopefully in the next 5-6 months I will be moving back to Alabama near my family. I have a rather large family: 24 aunts and uncles, 34 first cousins, and many more 2/3 cousins. All in Alabama except for me. So I understand living away from your loved ones.

  3. Very true! ๐Ÿ˜€
